How Big Chicken Coop Do I Need

0

Large chicken coops with only a small number of chickens in them can actually be a bad thing because the chickens can’t generate enough heat to keep the coop warm. the other key item inside the coop is the roosting/perching area.. You need a chicken coop, a henhouse, a chicken tractor -- but which one? and how big should it be? can you convert an old shed to a chicken coop? what kind of coop do you need? the type of coop you choose depends on whether the chickens will live full-time in it, have access to an outside run or larger portions of pasture, or whether it will be a movable coop that can be relocated frequently. A hen house (or chicken coop) is probably the biggest investment you will make. assuming your hens will be able to come out of the chicken house into a run or free range in part of the garden, then their house will only normally be used for laying eggs during the day and sleeping at night..

You need at least 3 sq ft per chicken so if you have 6 chickens, at least 18 sg feet so 4x5 coop is 20 sq ft so just about right. you don't have to spend a lot of money on a coop, do a search on here for pallet coops (made from wooden shipping pallets which you can often get free) or get your hands on a copy of building chicken coops for. Building a basic chicken coop for a small flock of birds is a solid weekend project for the determined do-it-yourselfer with basic carpentry skills, while the more elaborate coops could easily take several weeks (and will require advanced carpentry skills).. We started with a very large flock of 25 chickens. needless to say, we learned a lot. here's the ultimate guide to getting started with tips on how to check city ordinances, chicken needs, and how to select a chicken coop..
